European champions Barcelona, are out of the champions league, after Greizmann scored a brace in the second leg of the quarterfinal clash to send the Blaugarans home for a second consecutive time at this stage of the tournament.

Griezmann opened scoring in the 37′ minutes through a header in the 18-yard box, and converted a late minute penalty to a second goal when Iniesta handled the ball in the 18-yard box. The brace sends Atletico through to the semifinal stage on 3-2 aggregate.

Atletico celebrates their victory over Barcelona

As usual, Barcelona enjoyed the ball possession which reached 72%,  while  28% went to the host, and also completed more passes than the host. But Atletico were more focused on stopping the trio of Messi, Neymar and Suarez from operating and they were good to that as the trio did not see the back of the net. Even though Suarez had two clear chances to do the damage, he played them into the safe hands of the goalkeeper.

Despite the 2-0 lead, Barcelona had an opportunity through a free-kick at the edge of the 18-yard box, to send the match into an extra time, but Lionel Messi wired the ball across the bar, ending Barcelona’s hope of extending the game.

In 2014, Barcelona failed to score a goal in Vicente Calderon stadium at this stage of the champions league when Atletico defeated them by 1-0, and a repeat of same has happened again with the margin increasing to 2-0.
