Real Madrid won the uefa champions league for the eleventh time after beating Atletico Madrid in a match that ended 5-3 after penalty shoot-outs in which Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning goal.
Though the Portuguese scored the winning goal for Madrid, he however failed to score during the period of play which would have given him an edge over Lionel Messi, who also missed-out by not scoring in the final last season when Barcelona defeated Juventus 3-1 to win the title for the fifth time.
Both players have scored in two finals, and have both had the opportunity to increase their tally in the final but failed to achieve such. Rather, it was Spanish and Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos who joined the league to become the first defender and fifth player to score in two finals.
Though Ronaldo is still on top in all-time goals scored at the champions league with 93 goals, ahead of the Argentine player who is 83, Ronaldo could not increase his tally by scoring in the final.
