Bunmi Foundation Gives Hope To Sports In Yaba Model Primary School

A non-governmental organization known as Bunmi Foundation established in memory of the late Oluwabunmi Omotayo Adeday who died on September 25, 2013 has restored life to an existing but abandoned primary school known as Yaba Model Primary and Nursery school within the Surulere area in Lagos.  Aside renovating and making Yaba Model Primary school up to a standard that is befitting and meets the modern day school structure, Bunmi Foundation moved a step further by practically giving hope to grassroots Sports development which was physically lacking in the school for more than 40 years.

The installation of a five-aside football pitch by the foundation is worth appreciating, as this writer who was also a pupil of the school between 1986-1991 writes authoritatively, that the quest by pupils then to play football was on the high side, but the facilities were practically not there. In fact, at times we ended up playing orange pills and when caught by a teacher then, it was a big problem.

More so, the foundation also installed a modern iron swinger and slider for the kids, the said swinger is arguably the first to be installed by the school since its inception more than 50 years ago. Iron Swingers and Slides were found in notable private schools within the area in those days, it was basically perceived by pupils of Yaba Model Primary school then, as an exclusive right of "Children from affluent homes".

No doubt, there are several other innovations that were put in place by the foundation, such as modern computer equipment, ultra-modern toilet facilities, neatly renovated classrooms and a conducive environment that gives room for learning. But that of Sports remains significant, it was the agitation of past generational teachers, the hope Sports men and women of yester-years and a dream come true for this generation. The renovation by the Bunmi Foundation has made Yaba Model of today become a school with a standard in terms of sport, with special emphasis on football which was arguably one sport that is mostly recognized by the school and people living in her environs. To back-up the above with statistical facts, there is no school within the area which Yaba Model primary and nursery school is situated,that boasts of having a standard five-aside football pitch as that which was built by the Bunmi foundation. It is arguably the first and the best, built from the little portion of land available to the foundation and converted to a pitch in the best interest of the pupils. It is a project for the future and a blessing to the school.
