Lionel Messi sensationally announced his retirement from international football, after Argentina lost 4-2 in the final of the Copa America Centenario final to Chile in New Jersey.
The Argentine forward told reporters after the match that “For me the national team is over. I’ve done all I can, it hurts not to be a champion,” the 29-year-old Barcelona superstar said after defeat in a major final with Argentina.
The Barcelona forward lost his penalty during the shootout, leading to further frustration for the star who has put in all he can for his nation to win a major title and break the 23-year old trophy drought.
Lionel Messi finished his career becoming the second all-time highest goal scorer for Argentina with 53 goals, and leading his side to a three fruitless consecutive final during his playing days.
Argentina and Barcelona teammate Javier Mascherano has also decided to call time on his international career.
