Chile beat Argentina 4-2 after penalties to win the Copa America Centenario final at the MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey, winning a second major title ahead of the Argentines for a second time, and also denying the Argentine an opportunity to win a major title on a three consecutive row.
It was a bad day for the Barcelona forward whose effort in the match failed to yield the desired result after playing in three consecutive final for his national side. Messi was also booked with a yellow card for diving, he lost his penalty in the shootout, leading to further frustration for the Argentine star.
Argentina lost in the FIFA World Cup final to Germany in 2014, lost to Chile in the Copa America final in 2015, and a third spell to Chile again in the Copa America Centenario final in 2016, failing to break the 23-year old title jinx.
The match which ended 0-0 after extra time entered a penalty, with Chile winning 4-2 after penalty.
