The captain of the Nigerian U23 team, Mikel John Obi was shocked as the Germans outclassed the Nigerian side in the semifinal match to book a place with host Brazil on Saturday in the final in the men’s football event.
The 29-year-old Chelsea midfielder is arguably Nigeria’s biggest player that made the team for the Rio 2016 Olympics. He pleaded with the Coach to be part of the team, and was eventually considered as one of the over-aged players.
Though Mikel made an impact in the first half when he dribbled two defenders at the edge of the 18-yard box to try a shot, but his effort was blocked by the German side who did not give the Eagles captain enough room to operate.
Tactically speaking, Mikel was not used in the right position, as he went too forward searching for passes that made him a bit ineffective on the field of play.
