27 years after, we remember the death of the patriotic late Samuel Okwaraji who died on the field of play while playing for Nigeria on August 12, 1989.
Okwaraji died in a FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Angola, at the National stadium Lagos. He slumped in the 77th minutes of play on the field and medical report conducted later showed that he died of cognitive heart failure.
Until his death, the late Samuel Okwaraji was an international footballer and also a Lawyer who had completed his masters degree from the University of Rome and happens to be among the very few Nigerians who was able to successfully combine Sport with education.
Upon his death, the family of the late Samuel Okwaraji missed all financial benefits and right that was supposed to come to him from his club VFB Stuttgart, because he embarked on a journey to serve Nigeria without the full consent of his club.
