Super Eagles captain and Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has run out of favour with Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, the saga all started when Mikel decided to join the U-23 team in the Rio Olympics and Chelsea announced on November 4, 2016 that the club will not renew his contract when it expires.
Unfortunately, the 29-year-old Olympic bronze medalist has not played under the Italian manager and his destination is yet unknown.
Jose Mourinho who had worked with the Super Eagles captain during his period of sojourn with the blues, may offer him a lifeline wire going by the fact that Mourinho have always had Mikel in his plan while in charge at Stamford bridge.
While the former Chelsea boss was in charge at Stamford bridge, Mikel attempted to leave Chelsea but Mourinho stopped his plan, showing that the Portuguese want him around. Interestingly, this action took place during the time when the Portuguese manager was sending series of players on loan but he kept Mikel back.
Though the Portuguese barely gave him first team shirt in most premier league matches, he had always brought him in to “lock-up” the defence whenever Chelsea had taken the lead and Mourinho feels it is time to end the match. Mourinho once said that Mikel would not leave Chelsea because he was part of his plan.
Mourinho is in charge of Manchester United and has brought several players to Old Trafford, and if for the purpose of “lock-up” the former Real Madrid manager needs Mikel, he definitely would ask for his signature when the transfer window comes knocking.
