Villarreal were at the verge of getting and celebrating a famous win against Barcelona, before Lionel Messi’s late goal denied the host a nine year record which the Catalans have had against Villareal.

A win for Villarreal would have given them their first win against Barcelona in the past nine years and that would have also taken them to the fourth position on the Spanish La Liga table.

Luis Enrique’s men did the playing and had the possession, but Suarez and Neymar failed to make good use of the chances created to get Barcelona a win against Villareal, and they also gave out lose passes to their opponents on several occasions.

Barcelona are now third on the table while Sevilla who got an away win against Real Socieda move to the second position of the table.

Lionel Messi’s goal makes him the leading top scorer in the Spanish La Liga this season with 13 goals.
