Espanyol midfielder Oscar Melendo struck in the 88th minute winner to end Barcelona’s 29-game unbeaten run and shocked the Copa del Rey defending champions on Wednesday night.
Barcelona’s hope to take the lead in the 62nd minutes failed when Lionel Messi missed a penalty as Barcelona failed to break through before the 20-year-old’s late strike secured Espanyol their first win against Barca since 2009.
Espanyol maintained their defensive game to try and contain Barcelona and it worked, with the Catalans stifled and unable to create many openings in the first half.
Barcelona will be looking forward to overturn a 1-0 deficit in the second half to Camp Nou, to keep their hopes of reaching the semifinal alive.
