The City of Lagos in Nigeria has experienced an unusual calmness following a 6-0 victory which Manchester City inflicted on Chelsea in an English premier league match on Sunday evening.
Lagos have a large number of Chelsea fans who had looked up to a victory ahead of their match at the Etihad stadium, but were stunned by the humiliation which they got even before the match came to an end.
Notable bars and viewing centres which were visited in the Surulere area of Lagos were not in the usual lively mood which they had been known for, particularly when Chelsea were playing as some became deserted even before the 80th minutes.
City’s first four goals in the 25th minutes was a heavy blow for Chelsea fans before half-time, and some fans who were still being optimistic at the lead hoped that things would turn around soon in the second-half.
But things got worse in the second-half for the fans in Lagos when Sterling was brought down in the 18-yard-box to give City a penalty, and Aguero who had a brace already eventually converted the spot-kick to grab his 15th hat-trick in the 56th minutes extending the lead to 5 goals.
“It was a mess of a game” one Chelsea fan described the 5-0 lead while he hoped that Chelsea will at least score a consolation goal before final whistle. But his mood became worse in the 80th minutes, when Sterling pulled in the sixth goal of the match to inflict on Chelsea her worse defeat since they lost 7-0 at Nottingham Forest in April 1991.
One fan who had a history of taking about four bottles of beer found it very difficult to even take half of a bottle when City took a first-half 4-0 lead. His mood was so devastating that he had to pay for the beer and walked away without even finishing the contents of the bottle.
The loss for Chelsea meant they have jeopardized their chances of finishing top four with United now seated at the fourth position courtesy of City’s victory and Arsenal are now on fifth position but tied on points with Chelsea.
Interestingly, Chelsea will meet with Manchester City again in the League Cup final again this month when Sarri will probably have an opportunity to put a smile on Chelsea fans again should they beat City.
