The Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria Mr. Debo Oshundun has debunked speculations suggesting that the Chapter has endorsed the candidacy of the APC Gubernatorial candidate Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the next governor of Lagos State.
Debo who spoke today with newsmen at the SWAN Secretariat shortly after the departure of Babijide Sanwo-Olu during his campaign visit to the Secretariat, said: “We are not a political party and we do not endorse candidate for Gubernatorial elections”.
“Lagos SWAN is open to have discussions with any candidate who wish to be governor of Lagos State and we will be willing to give all aspirants equal opportunities” he added.
He further noted that: “Our interest is to have people come around to tell us their vision and plans for the development of Sports in Lagos state and that is why all the Sports Journalist in Lagos state chapter assembled to listen to the APC Candidate and not to endorse him”.
“We will be glad to have all other gubernatorial aspirants come around and tell us what plans they have for us and the door is open to all”. “As you can see, today’s session was more interactive and that is the direction of the programme” he said.
On the issue of the renovation of the SWAN Secretariat which the Chapter Chairman spoke about during the interactive session in case Sanwo Olu emerges as the next Governor of Lagos State, Debo clarified: “The SWAN Secretariat has been in use for over 15 years and we believe that it needs to be renovated because it is necessary”.
“As you can see, some part of the building are having major structural defects and needs attention, so having an interactive session with an aspiring gubernatorial candidate where we presented our future plans does not in any way mean we have endorsed his candidacy”.
“I was part of those who started the project of having a befitting secretariat some 15 years ago, it was a a little bit tough to complete it but it was as a result of our interaction with the then Governor Mr. Raji Fashola that led to the assistance we got from the state government that led to the completion of the building”.
