Real Madrid’s unprecedented dominance of the uefa champions league came to a shameful end at Santiago Bernebeu as Ajax inflicted a 4-1 defeat on them to send them packing from the tournament.
Real Madrid who had won the champions league three times in a row before their exit possessed the ball more in the crucial encounter, but it was youthful Ajax who gathered confidence and ended their Europe reign.
It was like a bad dream for Madrid fans as they watched their side exit from the champions league in the round of 16 stage for the first time in the last eight years.
Although, Madrid had a first-leg advantage before the game started following a 2-1 away victory in Holland, which probably led to resting of key players in the team in the second leg. But a 20 minutes 2-0 lead by Ajax turned things around.
Ajax who are also former champions were more clinical, determined and focused in the encounter and their efforts paid off following the victory.
