Five-time champion Roger Federer has been sent packing from the US Open. His exit came after Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov won a late-night thriller to end his stay.
Although the 38-year-old had won all seven of their previous meetings but an unseeded Dimitrov fought back to win 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2.
The BBC Sport reports that Federer, who needed treatment for a back injury in the latter stages, said: “I felt it the whole time, but I was able to play.”
The 28-year-old Dimitrov will now face Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the last four.
The Bulgarian was also reported by the source to say: “Clearly in the end he was not at his best. I used every opportunity I had,”.
