His goal eventually happened to be the only goal of the match. It also gave an almost 25,000 supporters the confidence that their Tokyo 2020 dream is no mirage.
However, Mali whose hope of breaking their 16-year-old absence from the Olympics came out stronger in the second-half to salvage a point.
Their efforts yielded no goal. But it eventually handed substitute Hamdi the second yellow-card of the match, after Mali’s Kanoute picked the first in 35 minutes.
Mali are now left with an uphill task of getting victories when they meet Ghana and Cameroon in their last two group matches.
