Finalists Announced For First World Athletics Photograph of The Year Award

With five days to go until the World Athletics Awards 2019, the finalists for the Photograph of the Year award have been selected.

This is the first edition of the Photograph of the Year Award since the name was changed from IAAF to World Athletics.

From the 116 images that were submitted, a panel of judges – comprising David Burnett, Anthony Edgar, Raquel Cavaco Nunes, Katharine Merry and Sanya Richards-Ross – were given the task to narrow the entries to three.

About the nominated photographers

Andrej Isakovic
A native of Serbia, Isakovic is a regional staff photographer for the AFP in the western Balkans. He began his career working in local and regional media in 1996, and joined the AFP in 2014.

Felix Sanchez Arrazola
A frequent contributor to Runner’s World Spain since 2005, Sanchez regularly contributes to Spanish newspapers Marca, AS, El Mundo among many others. Sanchez won the World Athletics photo award last year.

Patrick Smith
A staff photographer with Getty Images based in Baltimore, USA, Smith documents news, sports and feature stories in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan region and beyond. Smith has covered numerous major sporting events and has received numerous awards including ‘Sports Photographer of the Year’ by Pictures of the Year International and ‘Photographer of the Year’ by the White House News Photographers Association.

The winner will be announced live on stage at the World Athletics Awards 2019 on Saturday 23 November in Monaco.

Additionally, the nominated photos, along with 24 other shortlisted images, will form part of a photography exhibition which will be held alongside the World Athletics Awards from 20-24 November at the Meridien Hotel in Monaco.

The three finalists will also form the panel to determine the winner of the competition for Fan Photograph of the Year.
