The year 2019 is gradually tickling away with lots of memories going with with it particularly for Nigerian-born boxer Anthony Joshua who would not forget the year in his career.
Before 2019, Anthony Joshua had remained unbeaten 22 times, winning all fights in his professional career and amassing world titles that made him become the most popular boxer in the world.
However, on 1 June 2019, Joshua suffered his first ever defeat in his professional career as Andy Ruiz Jnr defeated him to inflict on him the biggest shock in his boxing career.
It was probably a period in which AJ would not forget in a hurry. Every thing he had worked for in life went down at that fight in 2019. Joshua’s belts had all gone he had a task of going in for a second fight to enable him win back his lost titles or walk away and lose it for ever.
There were mixed feelings about the loss, some believed it marked the end of Joshua, as he would never recover from the loss again. Another school of thought believed that Joshua would recover from it, but the loss was a moment for sober reflection that would make him taste the other side of success.
Joshua celebrated his 30th birthday on October 15, 2019 with memories of a loss, and was probably looking forward to salvage the situation before the end of the year.
But Joshua himself was determined to rise from his fall in the same year, he understood that a rematch was key for him to get himself back and also face the future.
It also gave the boxer an opportunity to seek counsel and advice ahead of his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jnr. and it was then he understood that for him to get his world titles back, he must not think of getting it through Knock-out. He must be willing to win it through step by step.
On 7 December, and with less than 24 days to end of 2019, Joshua succeeded in salvaging his lost belts, beating Ruiz Jnr at the Diriyah Arena in Saudi Arabia to reclaim his lost titles and prepare for a new year without a loss.
Joshua would at all times remember the year 2019, a year in which he experienced a fall and rise in his career. A year in which he gathered more experience, and probably had a taste from the bitter pills of failure, but with high hopes to improve for the future.
