The CEO of Pipul TV Mr. Benjamin Okoroafor has stated that the media in Nigeria can help develop the local leagues and make it a brand to reckon with.
Okoroafor stated this during an interactive session with Journalists on the HOT SEAT of NIGERIA SPORTS CENTRE anchored by Akeem BUSARI on Friday, July 17.
responding to one of the questions from one of the Journalists, the Pipul TV CEO said:
“The reason why there is huge followership of the Premier League in UK and other parts of Europe is there is large followership”.
“There is enough media coverage and hype he added and that is the secret”.
It is difficult to distinguish between fan support from a club like Accrington Stanley FC in UK and Manchester United”. It’s almost the same thing when it comes to fan support”.
The media coverage has helped people to appreciate their leagues and that is why there is large followership”.
Okoroafor whose TV has enjoy media mileage as the NLO Sponsors for over three years however noted that they have not achieved much yet compared to their expectations.
“We have not achieved anything yet” he started. “Achievement will come when we have millions of Nigerians, watching our local league matches at home and we also have thousands of them packed at the local stadia watching same matches the same way it happens in Europe”.
“When we have Nigerian families with seasoned tickets of our local league matches, then I can tell you we have achieved”. “That is my dream and that is what we are looking up to”.
“It does not matter the league”. It could be Professional League, National League and others, provided it is our local leagues”. That is when you begin to see local support for it he added.
Okoroafor further added that if the Nigerian leagues begin to have large followership, it will boost business opportunities around the stadia.
“Once this happens, real estate infrastructures will come”. “And this we will turn our local stadia into edifices that will support businesses”.
“I once visited our National Stadium and wept”. “It is wasting away and nothing serious is happening there”.
However, I strongly believe that we shall get to that level, having gotten our own share of set-backs”. “We remain focused and hopefully, we shall get there he concluded.
