On this day August 12, 1989 Nigeria’s Samuel Okwaraji died on the field of play while playing for Nigeria.
It was a FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Angola, at the National stadium Lagos. He slumped in the 77th minutes of play on the field and medical report conducted later showed that he died of cognitive heart failure.
Until his death, the late Samuel Okwaraji was an international footballer and also a Lawyer. He had completed his masters degree from the University of Rome.
Okwaraji was among the very few Nigerians who were able to successfully combine Sport with education.
His death was a huge blow to his family and the entire Nigerian football as whole. Sadly, all financial benefits and right that was supposed to go to his family from his club VFB Stuttgart was missed, because he embarked on a journey to serve Nigeria without the full consent of his club.
