Lionel Messi once said he was ready to swap his five Ballon D’or title for one national title with Argentina. This goes to tell how important winning at least a major title is important to the former Barcelona star.
Interestingly, this is the first final Messi will play with Argentina without being a player of Barcelona. He has reached four finals and yet winning a major title with Argentina has been imossible.
Seven years back, Messi reached the final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil as a Barca player and lost to Germany. The Argentine could not bear the frustration he announced his retirement before series of appeal where made which made the Argentine rescind on his decision.
The situation got worse for the Argentine after returning from retirement in 2014, as he was faced with two consecutive finals in the Copa America Cup in 2015 and 2016.
In both situations, Messi saw the trophy but did not lift it, as his side finished runners-up and more frustration set in. But in all these cases, Messi had not missed out in Barcelona as he always had something to celebrate at club level.
When talks about contract renewal was raised after his contract expired on June 30th, Messi had stated he does not want to be distracted with any contract talks. His reason was that he needed to concentrate on the ongoing Copa America.
If Messi wins the Copa America 2021, it means he has done that as a non player of Barcelona. Could that also imply that the Argentine need not be a Barcelona player to win a major trophy his nation, after raking in several trophies for club at Barcelona?.
So much will be said after the match on Saturday when the Argentine leads his side to his possible final with his nation.
