Premier League leaders, Chelsea, who were three points ahead of defending champions Manchester City, were compelled to a 1-1 draw by recuperating Manchester United in their Sunday clash at Stamford Bridge.
The draw means Chelsea have dropped by two points, but still remain on top with one point lead ahead of Manchester City who secured a 2-1 win at Etihad to close on the gap.
Manchester United with Carrick in charge kept Ronaldo on bench with the intention to field a defensive midfield and frustrate the league leaders.
Their game plan worked as they salvaged a point from a match where they took lead in 50′ minutes with goal coming from Sancho.
However, Chelsea who had to battle with the frustration of not scoring earlier despite enjoying greater possession found themselves in a situation where they were struggling to get a draw.
Their efforts paid off in the 69th minutes through a spot kick after Thiago Silva was brought down in the 18-yard-box and this seemed to be a relief for Thomas Tuchel’s men.
