The Group Stage of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021 was concluded on Thursday. So far, Sixteen teams have reached the second edition of the continental showpiece since it became a 24 nation tournament.
Sports Intelligence Magazine looks at some statistics with support from Opta as the tournament continues with the hope of the final coming up on February 6.
A total number of 36 matches was played in the group stage which produced 68 goals with an average of 1.89 goals per match while host, Cameroon scored the highest number of goals in the group stage with 7 goals.
Group C which has Morocco, Gabon, Comoros and Ghana produced the highest number of goals with a total of 15 goals scored, while group B with Senegal, Guinea, Malawi and Zimbabwe had the least with 8 goals.
Cameroon’s Vincent Abubakar remains the leading highest goal scorer after the group matches, the 29-year-old Al-Nassr forward of Saudi Arabia have netted five goals so far.
On points, Nigeria recorded the highest points in the group stage. The Eguavoen-led side picked all available points in the group from three wins, equaling the gaffers self-record of 2006. However, Mauritania had the least with zero point and did not record a single goal.
Senegal are the most defensive side so far after the group matches, they are the only group leader who did not concede a single goal in the group and yet scored the least with just one goal to finish top.
