The former Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Mr. Debo Oshundun has apologised to the Secretary of the Caretaker Committee Olatutu Oladunni.
The apology came after the former Lagos boss went on air during a live television programme (Sports Splash) on February 17th, 2022 and described Olatutu Oladunni as “jobless”.
Knowing that there may be brewing crisis from the defamatory statement which he made while on air, Mr. Oshundun recently sent in a hand-written letter of apology to Olatutu Oladunni dated May 23, 2022.
An extract from the apology letter which was made available to Sports Intelligence Magazine reads:
“The word Jobless was not intended to attack anyone. I hereby retract the statement that she is Jobless”. “I sincerely apologise for using the word Jobless to describe the person of Olatutu Oladunni”.
Although, some legal practitioners who were privileged to access the apology letter have disagreed with Mr. Debo Oshundun.
Their argument is based on the fact that Mr Oshundun did not address the letter properly to Olatutu Oladunni who was slighted on air in her capacity as the Secretary of the CTC Lagos SWAN, they believe that the apology letter should be rewritten.
However, the Lagos SWAN Caretaker Committee Secretary Olatutu Oldunni has accepted the apology letter and moved on. She wrote as acceptance: “I hereby “Accept” and “Retraction” of the defamatory statement of Debo Oshundun” (Signed) Olatutu Oladunni.
Recall that the National SWAN under the leadership of Sir Honour Sirawoo had called for proper electoral processes after the Triennial Congress in line with the provisions of the reviewed SWAN Statutes, which the then Mr. Debo Oshundun failed to comply with.
National SWAN was left with no other option than to set up a Caretaker Committee for Lagos SWAN. The CTC have since taken charge and are mandated to ensure that a smooth and credible transition process is put in place with the hope of restoring Lagos Chapter back to its glorious days.
