President Muhammad Buhari has approved Nigeria’s withdrawal from International basketball competitions for a period of two years.
A white paper from the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports development by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of youth and sports development confimed this.
According to the statement, the decision became necessary following the unending crises that have plagued and nearly crippled the development of basketball in Nigeria.
“The withdrawal of Nigeria is in order to concentrate efforts by the government towards revamping the sport from the grassroots as well as domestic basketball leagues which have become moribund.
The development will also allow for the setting up of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the management and development of the domestic Basketball Leagues in Nigeria and to further address other related issues around the development and advancement of the game in Nigeria.
According to the statement, the Terms of Reference and membership of the Interim Management Committee will be communicated in due course.
