The Governor of Rivers State Gov. Nyesom Wike has charged players of the Rivers United to qualify from the group stage of the 2022/2023 CAF Champions League and get $40,000 each.
Gov. Wike who is also Power of Sports of Africa disclosed this during a reception held for the heroic Rivers United team who won the first ever NPFL title of the state.
Wike who is also not going to be seated as Governor for the entire of next season assured the team that governance is a continuous process and he is confident that his successor who is also present at this ceremony is being carried along and will surpass what his administration has done for Rivers United.
“I am carrying along the incoming governor of Rivers State”, Wike said.
“And I am sure that he is seeing all what we have been doing and will surpass it”. “That is the real essence of governance and I expect the next governor to do more for the team and sports general in the state when he takes over from me next year” Wike added.
Gov Wike further hinted that the 10-points lead which Rivers United used to win the league was not something anyone could manipulate, as the team took a lead which mischief makers would find difficult to compromise even if they wanted to try such he stated.
He further stated that the choice of tour in Madrid for the team became necessary as Real Madrid is arguably the best club in the whole world now and he wants the team to get the best ahead of their CAF Champions League preparation which kicks of next season.
Rivers United will for the first time represent Nigeria at the CAF Champions League after winning the NPFL title 77 points.
