Nigeria’s Super Falconets will be looking forward to unseating group leaders South Korea when both teams meet on Sunday in their second group match at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup..
South Korea defeated Canada by 2-0 in their opener to overtake Nigeria who had earlier beaten France by 1-0 and the Asian girls went top on goal difference even though they were tied on points.
Their meeting on Sunday would be their third at this level and Nigeria, who have emerged victorious in their last two meetings, would be looking forward to establishing superiority over the Asians.
Both sides first met on August 19, 2012 in Japan, and Nigeria handed them a 2-0 win in their group match. Their second meeting was on August 9, 2014 in Canada and it was in the group stage, which eventually ended in a 2-1 scoreline in favour of Nigeria.
Interestingly, in all of their meetings, Nigeria finished top of the group and South Korea finished second, with both teams qualifying for the knockout stage. A likely repetition of such a feat is imminent in this clash if Nigeria wins.
Nigeria’s best performance at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup was finishing as runners-up on two occasions, in 2010 and 2014. And in both cases they lost to Germany. While South Korea’s
Coach Danjuma, who believes that the “Nigeria spirit” will play a vital role in this tournament despite his girls not having enough camping in their preparatory stage, is looking forward to having his girls qualify after their clash against the Asians.
