Nigeria’s representatives at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, Flamingoes, today piped their United States counterpart to reach their first ever semifinal at the cadet championship.
The game, which ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of play, went straight to penalties before the African champions ended the USA’s hope of going beyond the quarterfinal.
Flamingoes took the lead in the 27th minute when Edafe converted a spot kick to give Africa hope, but Villarreal’s 40th minute strike leveled up for the United State.
For a game that was delayed by lightning and thunder, so much was expected and the Flamingoes did not let the terrestrial distraction make them lose focus.
The second half saw more attempts to score and nice defensive games from both sides, as both teams were being careful both in attack and defense.
After 90 minutes of play with no goals coming from either side, the game went straight into penalties before Nigeria won by 4-3.
The victory means Nigeria have reached the semifinal for the first time, and the players must be filled with so much adulation for being the side to end the hopes of tournament favourites the United States.
Nigeria will now wait to meet the winner between Tanzania and Colombia in the semifinal of the tournament.
