The Governor of Edo State , Godwin Obaseki, has told the management of a Santos FC delegate who recently paid him a visit that their visit was timely as it happened at a point when the state government was embarking on a sports development programme.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Philip Shuaibu disclosed this on Monday at the Government house in Edo while receiving a delegate from Brazilian side Santos FC.
Shuaibu noted that the government of Edo State is using sports to tackle issues of labour and, as such, is doing everything possible to use it to address restlessness.
He further noted that illegal female migration, which has also been one of the scourges affecting the state in the past, has now been put under check by sports and this is done by ensuring equality in payment of both the male and female folk.
“Our women’s football team, the Edo Queens, earn the same salary and allowance as the Bendel Insurance”. “This is to ensure that the women’s team don’t feel cheated”
“We are doing this to give the female folk to see sports and particularly football as a means of living as this will also help address issues of illegal female migration”.
On newly promoted Bendel Insurance, whose 2022/2023 season’s jersey was also autographed by Shuaibu and given as a souvenir to the Santos FC contingent, he said:
“Our Bendel Insurance is back after staying away from the premier league for several years.” “We hope to use the opportunity of their return to the top league to keep the newly renovated stadium and Benin City busy”.
“We ensured the name of the club was not changed despite the fact that the company named Bendel Insurance is no longer in existence”. “The football team Bendel Insurance is our pride and we will continue to give them adequate support to enable them do well”.
Shuaibu further added that the Sports Academy which the state government has established will give room for Santos FC to partner with them and assured that a memorandum of understanding will be signed with Santos to enable the two parties to have a clearly defined blueprint for operation.
