Abia Warriors handed seven-times NPFL champions a 2-0 home defeat in their opener of the 2022/2023 abridged league game.
It was the third away win recorded out of the first three matches since the league started last Sunday, and Abia Warriors who first defeated their host at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on January 15, 2017 by 2-1, now defeated them on same date by 2-0 six years after.
Prior to the match, Enugu Rangers boss Maikaba had boasted of targeting top three, but this home defeat would put him on the toes as they never planned to start the season with such poor performance.
Lukman opened scoring for the visitors in 41st minutes of the first half, before a second half injury time goal by Hammed ended Rangers’ hope of leveling up.
The win gives Abia Warriors an edge, it also extends their head to head win over Rangers to three in their last five meetings in the league.
Abia Warriors will be looking forward to continue with their form when they host Bayelsa United in the midweek fixtures on Wednesday.
