The 2021/2022 NPFL champions, Rivers United, started their title defence with a 2-1 victory over visiting Lobi Stars who were reduced to 10-men but attempted to escape with a draw.
A first half goal in the 16th minutes through Chukwu, put the defending champions in the lead in the first half.
A second half come-back through Abba’s strike leveled up the scorelines in 55th minute, but the visitors suffered a set back 10 minutes later as Chinedu who had earlier picked a first yellow card in first half got a second yellow card which sent him out of the game.
Despite being one man down, the defending champions searched for another goal to take a lead advantage, but it did not come until injury time when the decisive goal came to give Rivers United their first win in their first game.
The win is Rivers United fourth win over Lobi Stars at the Adokiye Stadium in Port Harcourt and the defending champions will be looking forward to improving on their performance in their next match.
