Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) defending champions Rivers United, returned to their winning ways with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Niger Tornadoes.
An early goal in the 7th minute of play through Enyinnaya Kazie’s strike put Stanley Eguma’s side in the driver’s seat, but it only took about 22 minutes later before the visiting side leveled up through a penalty kick from Waheed Adebayo.
However, two minutes after the Tornadoes leveled up, United’s defender Gideon Duru broke from the defense line to score their second goal and give the home side a lead which they maintained till half-time.
A total of 12 shots on goal was recorded with the home side having 5 while the visiting side had 7, but it was the 2-1 score line that ended the game as the remaining 9 shots on goal had no impact.
Rivers United, who drew their last match against Sunshine Stars, must have heaved a sigh of relief when the final whistle was blasted by the centre referee to secure the maximum three points.
They remain unbeaten after three matches and move top with 7 points, while the Tornadoes, who needed a victory to go top of the table, remain third in the table with six points from three matches.
