The University of Lagos may be doing very well in other Sports, but their football team is gradually under-performing at the NUGA Games and management need to give adequate attention to this.
During the 24th NUGA Games at Obafemi Awolowo University in 2014, UNILAG lost to UNIJOS in the third place match to finish fourth position, despite beating same UNIJOS at the group stage of the competition.
Circumstances leading to that loss where traced to technical issues arising from poor tactics leading to poor finishing and inability to defend adequately, and it ordinarily expected that such issues be given adequate attention but the institution paid deaf ears on it.
In Makurdi 2017, UNILAG where edged out from the group stage following a thriller 4-3 loss to UNIUYO, after the South-South institution cameback from a first half 3-0 lead to win UNILAG 4-3 on what can be best described as the "Miracle of UNIPORT"
UNILAG had lost their first group match, they entered their second match against UNI-UYO with great determination and produced 3 goals in the first half which gave the institution a 3-0 lead in the first-half and great hope of keeping their group stage qualification alive.
Unfortunately for UNILAG, the second half of the game turned out to be an opportunity for UNI-UYO to fulfill the "Miracle of UNIPORT", after scoring 4 goals to win and also end UNILAG'S hope of qualifying from the group stage with just 20 minutes to end the match.
That result did not just show that the football team did not come to the party, it also proved that they had failed to address lingering technical issues which has kept hunting the institution in football at the NUGA Games, hence making a huge mockery of the efforts which the institution had put in place for sports generally.
If the University of Lagos must make headway in football at the NUGA Games in the future, then there is need to overhaul the technical crew of the team to give room for positive changes in the team.
