Africa’s last hope, Nigeria, at the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina were sent packing by South Korea on Sunday in their quarterfinal clash which took place at the Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades.

A goalless full time play dragged the game into extra time, before Seok-Hyin Choi’s heading from a corner kick gave the Asians the lead in 95 minutes. Efforts made by Ladan Bosso’s boys to level up proved abortive as the Koreans were more tactical in holding on to their lead. Prior to the quarterfinal clash between Nigeria and South Korea, Nigeria was the only African side left in the tournament, after Gambia and Tunisia were knocked out in the round of 16. Senega who came as African champions could not survive from the group stage, as they were first to be knocked out at that stage. Nigeria however became one of tournament’s favourites, after beating hosts, Argentina in the round of 16 by 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals. This is the second time Nigeria will lose to South Korea at the U20 World Cup, the first was in 2005, when Nigeria took the lead in the first half before the Asians scored twice in the second half to defeat Nigeria.
