The exact dates for the AFCON 2021 which will be hosted by Cameroon is yet to be decided by the continental ruling body CAF.
This was disclosed in a communique issued by the executive committee of CAF after their meeting on Thursday which took place in Cairo, Egypt.
The AFCON which was previously played between January/February had to be moved to summer, to allow for players who play in European leagues take part.
Since CAF observed that January/February happens to be the peak period when most European clubs need those players who are released for the continental showpiece.
Subsequently, the Egypt 2019 edition of AFCON was played in the summer, giving room for a new calendar and structure.
However, Cameroon who are host for the 2021 edition may not be able to host the event during the summer. This is due to the fact that June and July is the peak of rainy season in Central Africa and West Africa regions.
According to the communique, CAF administration will now decide the dates, times and venues of matches after analysis of the opinions of the teams concerned.
