Former Nigerian international and Presidential aspirant for the NFF Ben Akwuegbu has stated that if voted in as the next NFF President he will give attention to grassroots football development.

Akwuegbu who was part of the Golden Eaglets team that represented Nigeria in 1989 disclosed this in a chat reported by exclusivenews.com and monitored by our correspondent.

"I am a grassroots man" he told the source. "This is exactly where my emphasis will be if voted as NFF President".

"The grassroots is the fulcrum of every country's football development and we cannot neglect it for any other thing" he reiterated.

Akwuegbu who made his debut for the national side in 2000 against Tunisia was also part of the silver winning AFCON 2000 co-hosted by Nigeria and Ghana.

He further represented Nigeria in the Japan /Korea 2002 World Cup and played further in European clubs.

Since retirement he has had a stint with Heartland FC as Assistant Technical Director and have pioneered several grassroots football clubs such as the Akwuegbu United of Owerri and Mbaise Lions which played in the Imo State FA Cup.
