Nigeria’s first Olympic gold medalists, Kanu Nwankwo and Chioma Ajunwa-Oparah are part of a 32-man committee set up by the Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha to actualize the states bid to host the 2022 edition of the National Sports Festival.
Kanu who captained a star-studded football team at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics was included as a member of the commitee. ASP Chioma Ajunwa-Opara who remains Nigeria’s only individual gold medalist at the Olympics also got appointed as a member.
Also on the list is Chief Adiokiye Amiesemeka who was part of the then Green Eagles team that won Nigeria’s first AFCON in 1980.He was included as one of the bid-ambassador, while former NFA Chieftain Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima was also appointed as bid ambassador.
To pilot the affairs of the heavy-weight 32 man committee, Dan Ngerem was appointed as Chairman/bid ambassador of the committee, while Chairman of the State Sports Commission Chief Fan Ndubuoke was appointed as the secretary of the committee.
The strength and role which the media would play towards actualizing this mandate was hugely considered. And this perhaps led to the appointment of AIPS Africa chapter President Mr. Mitchell Obi.
The committee also has distinguished personalities such as Hon. Bukola Olopade-member/Bid Ambassador, Hon. Tunji Adeyinka-member, Mike Itemuaghor-member, Dame Comfort Obi-member, Hon. Uche Ogbuagu-member, Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu-member, Hon. Ichie Ken Agbim-member, Mr. Johnbosco Okeahialam-member, Mr. Reginald Ihebuzor-member, Dr. Sunny Ogulewe-member, Nze Elvis Agukwe-member and state Director of Members.
Others are Comrade Dan Nwayanwu-member, Mr. Chris Emeka Okeke-member, Mr. Leonard Ugboaja-member, Mr. Okey Onyebule-member, Mr. Clement Nwankpa-member, Ms. Adaora Onyechere-member, Dr. Ken Onyeati-member, Chief Charity Opara Asonze-member, Chief Damian Ezeagu-member, Chinemerem Enwerendu-member, Mrs. Christy Opara member and Mr. Okwum Omeaku member.
Imo, a State known for producing talents that has made Nigeria proud in Sports has been lagging behind in the past 10 years. The committee will also explore the rich tourist attraction of the state to bid for the 2022 National Sports Festival.
The committee will be officially inaugurated on Thursday, 28th November, 2019 inside the Sam Mbakwe hall at Concord Hotel in Owerri by 10am prompt.
