FIFA Shuns Nigeria’s Host Bid In U-20 Women World Cup

Nigeria's dream of hosting the FIFA U-20 Women Cup has come to an end with the World Governing body announcing Costa Rica and Panama as joint host.

Earlier in August FIFA technical team paid a visit to Nigeria for inspection, where they toured facilities in Lagos, Asaba, Benin and Uyo.

The outcome of that visit was not disclosed as the silence of the team on their visit caused more suspision.

Later on, another FIFA team paid a visit to Panama and Costa Rica. The outcome of that visit was that the duo of Panama and Costa Rica will host the event scheduled to hold in August 2020.

This will be the first time any FIFA event will be co-hosted by two nations since the 2020 World Cup which was co-hosted by Japan and Korea.

FIFA’s Chief Tournaments and Events Officer Colin Smith who appreciated the acceptance of the two North American countries who would co-host said:

“We would like to thank the Costa Rican and Panamanian football associations for their commitment towards women’s football and the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in particular. “We are looking forward to a fantastic competition in August,”.

“After the highly successful FIFA Women’s World Cup in France this year, it is important that we build on the momentum at all levels of the game. The U20WWC in Costa Rica and Panama next year is a perfect opportunity for us to continue driving the popularity of the game and with it being the first jointly hosted tournament – we can make the impact even greater,” said Sarai Bareman, FIFA’s Chief Women’s Football Officer.
