A 36-year-old woman and welder by profession whose son is a skillful footballer has called for help to enable her support his son's dream of becoming a professional footballer when he clocks 18. Mary Nneoma Uruakpah an N.C.E holder is from Abia State, but she lives in Rivers State with her husband, where she does her welding job and strives to support her son develop his skills in football.

She spoke with this writer and revealed that the skills which her 15-year-old boy possess needs to be given urgent attention, but expresses fear that such opportunity may not come as she is not financially capable to fund his trips for camping and training. “I have heard of several football camping taking place both in Nigeria and abroad”. “But it all comes and need to be funded”. “Sadly, I do not have enough to finance these trips” she started.

Mary wants her son;s skills to be developed

“My job is not a lucrative one, and I practically try to get clients but I hope to see him realize his dream of becoming a football star some day”. “Presently, he trains in Youth Arise Football Academy, but I know that if he gets better opportunities to attend camping and get advanced training, he would improve more and maybe become a professional footballer”. When questioned on why she does not allow her son join her in her welding job by helping out and also learning the skills, she quashed the idea saying it was not necessary. “Welding is not his vocation” she insisted. “My son’s vocation is football and I also see it as a profession he will thrive in it and excel if he gets the opportunity to develop his skills”.

Mary prefers to concentrate on her welding job withot her son joining her

“As for me, I am technically inclined in welding and I am also involved in painting as well as making shoes, but all these require funds too which is not available”. “But what is important for me right now is to assist my son make the best out of his skills in football” she maintained. However, Mary did not fail to add that she also had a sporting background when she was younger. According to her, she played football and also other sports such as table tennis and Handball. But it was in the game of table tennis and handball she won medals at some point during her hey days. When asked if she will welcome an opportunity for her son to play for another country rather than Nigeria, Mary said she is open to any opportunity that will make her son develop, not minding where he achieves such feats. “I would love him to play for Nigeria” she said. “But if an opportunity comes for him to naturalize in another country and play for them, I won’t say no to that ” she concluded.
