The Hon Minister of Youth & Sports development this morning in Abuja inaugurated a body called the Sports Industry Working Group (SWIG) which comprises Private Sector Industry Players and key Govt MDAs.
This body is to be tasked with the mandate to reposition the Sports sector in Nigeria from a Govt led one into a Private sector led industry. This effort has been led by NESG who started the process of developing strategies towards an industrialisation of the sports sector through evidence based research, statistics and strategies.
In the past year, the NESG have been working with the current Minister of sports and various stakeholders in an effort to effect an overall transformation of the Nigerian Sports Sector.
The Steering Committee of the SIWG comprises Private/ Social Enterprise Sectors business oriented individuals and the Permanent Secretaries of 7 key ministries considered germane to the development of a viable sports industry in Nigeria.
The Steering Committee is the Apex decision making and approving authority of the SIWG and sets the strategic direction for the Working Group.
It is hoped that this milestone in the industrialisation Road Map arising from the Ministry/ NESG Collaboration MoU signed last December will go a long way in meeting the goals of a vibrant sports industry that delivers economic and social benefits to the society
