The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has commended the initiative of the Federal Government to rename the Abuja National Stadium after the late MKO Abiola.
According to an official document signed by the Administrative Secretary of SWAN Habila Ramako. It conveyed the position of the apex ruling body of Sports Writers in Nigeria.
The document read: "The honour on MKO Abiola is well deserved in view of his holistic contributions to sorts development, in a way that encouraged the growth of administrators, participators and sports media, in Nigeria and the entire Africa".
"Abiola was a great patron of SWAN, who on several occasions, rescued sports Associations and national sports teams; using his time personal purse and influence"
"We are very proud of all that he did for sports and our association. He was a philanthropist par excellence. His efforts saved Nigeria a lot of embarrassment and brought honour to the country"
SWAN also used the medium to charge the Federal government to appoint a sports minister who is committed to the development of Sports so that the rot in the sports sector can be cleared.
It will be recalled that the former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung is the longest serving Sports Minister in Nigeria. But he heaped a whole lot of mess for the incoming Sports minister to battle, topmost is the lingering $150,000 which the AFN is yet to pay the IAAF among others.
