The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) is capable of improving her revenue generation if the Nairobi Treaty is signed. This was revealed by Dr. Ogaga Ifowodo during his welcome address at a Public Lecture & Special Awards which took place at the SWAN Secretariat on Friday April 26 inside the National Stadium. The event tagged Reach For Gold: Intellectual Property & Sports was organized to mark the World Intellectual Property Day. Ifowodo who was also the Chairman of the organizing committee of the event, stated that “The Nairobi Treaty seeks to protect the Olympic Symbol of five interlinked rings”. “In Kenya, no one uses the Olympic symbol for commercial purpose without getting authorization from the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, (NOCK) and this has provided a means of generating revenue for the NOCK” he stated. “But this is not the case in Nigeria, as organization uses the Olympic symbol and yet the NOC does not generate revenue from it”. “If the Nigeria Olympic Committee signs into the Nairobi Treaty, it will allow them prohibit organizations from the use of the Olympic symbol for commercial purposes except with the authorization of the International Olympic Committee” he concluded. Dr. Ogaga Ifowodo who is also a co-founder and the chairman of the Board of Trustees of Friends of the Creator (Artistic) Foundation FCF is a also a Lawyer, Poet, Scholar and columnist.
