In this exclusive chat President of FIFA-SoulMate Champions League Ngozi Odozor Cup bares her mind with Joseph Odoekwu of Sports Intelligence Magazine about the annual football Competition that has gathered staff of Soulmate Industries Ltd together. The excerpt below

Whats is the idea behind the football tournament?

First it is for the Soulmate family to come together and show that we are one family. If you listen to our anthem which was sung before the begin of the matches it says “We are one big family”. That is what we are showcasing. Second, we also want to let the world know that “All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy”. And that is why we have deemed it fit to make out time to play after work. So we want to let the world know that we are hardworking and we also promote Sports in our own way among our staff to ease off the tension and make us more healthy. So that’s all that we are doing today.

For how long has the competition been going on?

Its been on for a long time. But this is the fourth edition since it was formally accorded the status of the Soulmate Champions league. We have been playing it casually for a long period, before we started improving on it about four years ago,

Your team(Ngozi Babes) defeated Ijeoma Babes in the final to win the female category, what do you have to say about that?

We are grateful to God, and we thank God for that. Although I had predicted a 3-1 victory ahead of the match, but it ended 1-0 amd that’s also great. All the teams prepared very well, but we won. But what is important here is the spirit of Sportmanship, we are still friends irrespective of our side emerging victorious. I am also happy that we are winning the trophy for the second time in a row, its an honour.

What plans for the future?

We are planning better and we have also taken time to observe where are weaknesses are in this edition to enable us improve for next edition. We are looking forward to the next edition where the whole place will be filled with more spectators and surely will achieve that. There was a time we played at the stadium then, it was a bigger event and we are looking forward to such situation again, where we publicize the event and get people to come and watch us play.

As part of your future improvement plans, are you looking forward to having non-staff take part in the competition?

For now we are not looking forward to that. We do not want someone who does not understand the philosophy and culture of Soulmate Industries which is represented in the acronym “RICH”, meaning “Resilience” “Integrity” “Consistency” and “Humility” as sung in our anthem. So we do not want someone whose pedigree is not known to come and cause trouble in our midst, we really do not want that. Someone who has a “Must-win” mentality may lead to causing injury on others, and that’s not really what we want. For these reasons, we will restrict the competition to our staffs.
