Pep Guardiola's Manchester City got a late goal to secure a thriller 3-2 victory in Germany against Schalke 04 in the first-leg of the round of 16 tie.

City took the lead before the host scored twice through penalties to comeback and be at the driver's seat before time.

The situation appeared tough for City in the second-half when Otamendi got his first red card since joining the club, reducing his side to 10-men and jeopardizing City's chances of leveling up.

But Leroy Sane who returned to his former club struck in the 85th minutes to level up for City before Sterling converted goalkeeper Ederson's long pass five minutes later to secure a brilliant away victory for Pep's side.

The victory means City are unbeaten in their past eight Champions League games against German opponents (W7 D1), since a 1-0 defeat by Bayern Munich in September 2014
